Weekend getaways from Singapore: short trips sorted by travel time
Updated
Weekend getaways from Singapore are easiest to choose by travel time. Johor Bahru is 5 minutes away by train, Bintan and Batam are about 70 minutes by ferry, and Bangkok is about two and a half hours by air.
We sorted the short trips below by how long it takes to get there, because on a two-night weekend the journey decides more than the destination. Each group has a few places that suit it, what to do there, and links to our longer plans when a long weekend gives you more time.
How far can you go in a weekend?
A simple rule works well. For a two-night weekend, keep the journey under about three hours each way, door to door. For a three or four-day long weekend, a flight of up to about seven hours is fine, especially with an overnight flight out.
If you're choosing dates too, our Singapore public holidays 2027 page lists all five long weekends in 2027 and the leave days that stretch them.
Across the Causeway: under 1 hour to about 4 hours
Johor Bahru. The KTM Shuttle Tebrau runs from Woodlands Train Checkpoint to JB Sentral in about 5 minutes, which skips the Causeway traffic. A day or a night in JB suits food, malls, a spa and an easy family outing. The new RTS Link between Woodlands North and Bukit Chagar is expected to open in February 2027, subject to final approvals.
Desaru Coast. Beach resorts, water parks and golf on the east coast of Johor, roughly two hours by car from Singapore depending on the checkpoint queue. It's a good two-night family weekend if you'd rather not fly.
Melaka. A UNESCO-listed old town with a river walk, Peranakan food and Jonker Street on weekend evenings. Coaches from Singapore take roughly four hours, longer on holiday weekends, so we'd give it two nights.
Kuala Lumpur by train. From JB Sentral, KTMB's ETS trains take about four to four and a half hours to KL Sentral, which makes a calm alternative to the coach or a short flight.
By ferry: about 1 hour
Bintan. Ferries from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal to Bandar Bentan Telani take about 1 hour 10 minutes. Most visitors stay at the Lagoi resorts on the north coast for a quiet beach weekend, which suits couples and families with small children.
Batam. Ferries from HarbourFront to Batam Centre take about 1 hour 10 minutes and run many times a day. Batam is the easy choice for seafood, spa days and a short golf trip, and it works as a day trip too.
Both islands are in Indonesia, so bring your passport. Bintan Resort Ferries asks for one valid for at least six months from the travel date. Bintan and Batam are one hour behind Singapore, so check whether a timetable shows Singapore or local time.
Short flights: 1 to 3 hours
Flight times below are approximate, gate to gate.
- Kuala Lumpur, about 1 hour: street food, the Petronas Towers and day trips to Batu Caves
- Penang, about 1.5 hours: George Town's shophouses and hawker food, and a beach at Batu Ferringhi
- Phuket, about 1.5 hours: beaches and island boat days, best from about November to April when the sea is calmer
- Ho Chi Minh City, about 2 hours: cafes, markets and a day on the Mekong Delta
- Bangkok, about 2.5 hours: food, temples and markets. Two full days is enough for a first taste.
- Bali, about 2.5 hours: with a weekend we'd pick one base, such as Ubud or the south coast, rather than moving around
Chiang Mai is about three hours direct, or a slow and memorable trip on the sleeper train from Bangkok if you have four days.
Long weekends: 4 to 7 hours away
With a three or four-day weekend, an overnight flight out on Thursday or Friday night adds a full day. These places are worth it:
- Hong Kong, about 4 hours: harbour views, dim sum and hiking trails close to the city
- Taipei, about 4.5 hours: night markets, hot springs at Beitou and a day trip to Jiufen
- Seoul, about 6.5 hours: palaces, cafes and markets. Start with our Seoul food guide, and see our KTX booking guide if you add Busan.
- Tokyo or Osaka, about 7 hours: with four days we'd stay in one city. Our 3 days in Kyoto and 5 days in Tokyo plans both trim well.

Tips for a smoother short trip
- Fly or sail out on a Friday evening and come back on the last flight or ferry on Sunday, so you don't spend a day of leave on travel.
- Travel with hand luggage only on two-night trips. It saves time at both ends.
- Avoid the Causeway on Friday evenings and the eve of public holidays, when the checkpoint queues are longest.
- Book long weekends early. Flights, ferries and resort rooms on public holiday weekends go first, and prices rise as they fill.
Planning a weekend away as a group
- Agree on the budget and the travel time before the place. That rules out most of the debate.
- Pick one person to book the ferry or flights, so the group sits together and the times match.
- Split costs as you go, and settle up before you're home.
- Keep the plan in one place. With Tripmo's group trip planner, each person's ChatGPT, Claude or Grok adds to one shared plan on a map, so the ideas don't get lost in the group chat.

Questions
Where can I go for a weekend getaway from Singapore?
Within about three hours: Johor Bahru, Desaru and Melaka by land, Batam and Bintan by ferry, and Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Phuket, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City and Bali by air. With a long weekend, Hong Kong, Taipei, Seoul and Tokyo come within reach.
What is the shortest getaway from Singapore?
Johor Bahru. The KTM Shuttle Tebrau from Woodlands Train Checkpoint to JB Sentral takes about 5 minutes, plus immigration on both sides.
Do I need a passport for Bintan or Batam?
Yes. Both are in Indonesia, and Bintan Resort Ferries asks for a passport valid for at least six months from the travel date. Bintan and Batam are also one hour behind Singapore.
Is 3 days enough for Bangkok?
Yes, for one or two neighbourhoods, a temple morning and a lot of eating. The flight is about two and a half hours, so a Friday evening departure and a Sunday night return leave you two full days.
When does the RTS Link to Johor Bahru open?
The operator expects passenger service to start in February 2027, subject to safety certification and approvals in both countries. It will run between Woodlands North and Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru.
