Buldak in Korea: where to cook it and how the machine works

Eat Buldak like locals in Korea: cook it yourself at a ramyeon library, a convenience store cooker or the Han River, in about 4 to 5 minutes. Use the stir-fried noodle button, and put cheese or an egg on top if you want.

What Buldak is

Buldak is Samyang's fire-chicken ramyeon. It went on sale on 16 April 2012, from a spicy chicken dish Kim Jeong-su saw in Myeongdong in 2011. The launch note gives the original 4,404 Scoville, Samyang's own figure, close to a cheongyang pepper at about 4,000 to 10,000.

Which flavour

Start with cheese or carbonara. Buldak's guide of 25 December 2025 calls carbonara the creamy one and points a first-timer to cheese or carbonara. Bokkeum tangmyeon is the pack for heat like the original. Cheese, or a soft egg yolk, takes the edge off. Kimchi on the side is a normal extra.

How the machine works

The cooker in the photo is in a Busan shop. The top sign says to put the soup, an egg, cheese and anything else on the noodles, and to stir while it cooks. Noodles that sit still can stick and burn a hole in the bowl.

The left sign says to press the noodle button, then start, and the water comes out. The three buttons are 일반면 (regular noodles), 굵은면 (thick noodles) and 볶음면 (stir-fried noodles). Buldak is a stir-fried noodle, a bokkeum myeon, so press 볶음면. On the spout, 용도외 사용 금지 means do not use it for anything else. 화상주의 on the panel is the burn warning.

It is done when the timer runs out, about 4 to 5 minutes. The timer in the photo shows 4:45 left.

Some CU cookers work differently. Maeil Business, 9 January 2024, describes CU's Ohchef machines: you pay at the counter, then scan the pack's barcode, and the cooker sets the water and the time. The Busan machine in the photo uses the three buttons instead. Follow the sign on the one in front of you.

When you finish, take the bowl, the packet and the chopsticks to the bin.

What it costs

A bag is about 1,250 won for the original, 1,700 won for carbonara and 1,800 won for bokkeum tangmyeon. Yonhap reported those convenience-store prices on 8 June 2025, in a round where Samyang had not raised them. Read the tag in the shop. CU Hongdae Sangsang is a convenience store, so the pack there is the same kind of price. Pay at the counter or the kiosk before you cook.

Where to find one

A ramyeon library in Seoul. CU opened Hongdae Sangsang in Hongdae, Mapo-gu, on 4 December 2023, and called it a ramyeon library: the first convenience store it built around ramyeon. The release counts 105 kinds of bag ramyeon, about 120 cups, and three cookers, plus a wall of packs and topping recipes. The release gives Hongdae, not a street number.

A later CU release, 25 April 2025, says the chain then had more than 40 of these shops. It names Incheon Airport, Myeongdong Station and Seosulla-gil, and a few university areas. It names no Busan address.

A convenience store. A normal branch that has a cooker will do. CU and GS25 both place them, and not every branch has one. Hongdae Sangsang is the store CU described.

The Han River. A 14 August 2023 piece on Seoul's media hub says the convenience store inside Nanji Hangang Park has a machine for cooking ramyeon. The park's own page gives the address as 162 Hangangnanji-ro, Mapo-gu. Directions put the park about 20 minutes on foot from Mapo-gu Office station, line 6, exit 7, along Hongjecheon, or about 30 minutes from World Cup Stadium station, exit 1. The walk ends at the park.

Busan. The photos are from a shop there. The machine shows the buttons and the timer, and no chain name. From Seoul, the train is KTX. A day at the palace is Changdeokgung Secret Garden.

CU Hongdae Sangsang in Hongdae, Mapo-gu, opened 4 December 2023 with three cookers. The convenience store in Nanji Hangang Park, 162 Hangangnanji-ro, had a ramyeon machine as of 14 August 2023.

Where do I find one in Busan?

The cooker in the photos is a Busan shop. The machine does not name the chain. CU's April 2025 list of ramyeon shops names Seoul branches and no Busan address.
